Common questions

  • What is nortriptyline HCl?

Nortriptyline HCl is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) used to treat depression. Some people may be prescribed to use it to treat other conditions, including migraine headaches and nerve pain. Nortriptyline HCl affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause depression.

  • How does nortriptyline HCl work?

Nortriptyline HCl belongs to a class of drugs called tricyclic antidepressants. The drug blocks norepinephrine HCl and serotonin reuptake. By preventing reuptake, more of these neurotransmitters remain active in their receptors for longer periods of time, which helps boost mood.

  • What are the side effects of nortriptylineHCl ?

One of the most common side effects is dry mouth. Some people experience headaches, dizziness and/or drowsiness as a result of taking nortriptyline HCl. These side effects are typically mild. If these side effects are persistent or become more severe contact your provider.

  • How do I take nortriptyline HCl?

Nortriptyline HCl is usually taken orally once a day before bed. Always take your dose as prescribed by your provider. Your provider may start you on a low dose of nortriptyline and gradually increase the dose. Do not increase or decrease your daily dosage without first consulting your provider.

  • Can I take nortriptyline HCl with other medications?

Nortriptyline HCl can be taken with other medications and may be used as part of a combination therapy with other medications to treat depression. However, nortriptyline may interact with other medications, including MAOIs, SSRIs, and anticholinergic medications. Always consult your provider before taking two medicines at once, and tell your provider about any medications or supplements you’re currently taking before starting nortriptyline.

  • Are there any risks when taking nortriptyline HCl?

It's always a good idea to tell your provider if you're taking any other medications while on nortriptyline HCl, and be sure to let them know if you start or stop any medications during treatment. Although nortriptyline HCl isn't thought to cause serious interactions, it can still affect how other drugs work in your body. If you're on any blood thinners such as warfarin (Coumadin®), for example, it may affect how much blood-thinning medication your body needs. Also, nortriptyline HCl can cause drowsiness when taken with alcohol. If you’re planning on drinking while on an antidepressant, talk to your provider beforehand about how to take it safely.

  • How quickly does nortriptyline HCl work?

You may start to feel better within two weeks of beginning nortriptyline HCl. It typically takes between two to six weeks before you feel the full benefits of taking nortriptyline HCl. Do not stop taking nortriptyline HCl suddenly, even if you feel it is not helping your symptoms. If nortriptyline HCl does not appear to be helping after six weeks, contact your provider.
