Nurx offers the birth control shot for as little as $0 with insurance or $75 per month without insurance.
It usually takes at least a few months for your fertility to return after stopping the birth control shot. Women who have been using the shot for a year or more may have to wait longer until they are able to conceive.
Earliest Chance to Conceive
It’s unlikely that you’ll be able to get pregnant right after you stop taking the shot. Because each shot delivers enough hormones to protect against pregnancy for three months at a time, the earliest you may be able to conceive is about 12 weeks after your last injection.
Menstrual Cycle Regulation
With the birth control shot, it can take longer than some other methods of birth control for a woman’s menstrual cycle to regulate once you stop using it. This can create a delay between when the contraceptive effects of the last shot wear off and the return of fertility.
The longer you use the shot, the longer you may have to wait until you’re able to conceive. For women who have been using the birth control shot for one year, the average length of time for the menstrual cycle to return to normal is approximately six months after the last injection.
Trying to Conceive
It’s difficult to know exactly when you’re able to get pregnant again after you stop using the birth control shot. You may notice irregularities with your menstrual cycle for a few months, but this doesn’t necessarily indicate that you’re unable to conceive. It’s still possible to get pregnant even though your menstrual cycle isn’t “normal,” but an abnormal cycle makes it hard to identify when or if you’re ovulating and time sex to when you’re most likely to conceive.
Once three months have passed since your last injection, you can start trying to get pregnant. If a year or more has passed and you’re still unable to get pregnant, you can talk to your medical provider about fertility testing or ask about tips to improve your chances of getting pregnant.
