• What types of hair loss does Nurx treat?

  Nurx specializes in female pattern hair loss, also referred to as androgenetic alopecia. We can also treat traction alopecia, which is associated with hairstyles that pull on the hair.
  
  We do not treat telogen effluvium, which is a temporary form of hair loss caused by a physically or emotionally stressful event like a surgical procedure, after giving birth, COVID-19 infection, or extreme weight loss. At this time, we also do not offer treatment for other less common types of alopecia, such as alopecia areata (autoimmune disease that causes hair to fall out in coin-sized patches). Additionally, we do not treat Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia (CCCA), one of the most common kinds of scarring alopecia affecting African American women.

• How much hair loss is normal?

  While some shedding is normal, if you suddenly notice more hair than usual falling out (greater than 125 strands per day), you're shedding clumps of hair, or your hair seems to be visibly thinning, it’s likely that you’re experiencing hair loss. Nurx is here to help!

• What causes women's hair loss?

  There are many potential causes of hair loss in women, including aging, hormonal changes (e.g. menopause), genetics, underlying medical conditions, medications, childbirth, hair care practices, and physical or emotional stress. At Nurx, we provide treatment for the most common form of hair loss in women, which is androgenetic alopecia (female pattern hair loss). This condition affects about one-third of susceptible women, which includes 30 million women in the United States. • What medication does Nurx prescribe for women's hair loss?

  Nurx offers a range of prescription options for female pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) and traction alopecia, including Minoxidil Foam and Selenium Sulfide Shampoo. Your medical provider will prescribe medications that are appropriate for your concerns, which may include medications you don’t see on the website.

• How does women's hair loss treatment from Nurx work?

  Simply answer a few questions about your symptoms or health history on the Nurx website or app, then share a few photos of your hair and scalp. There’s no appointment required and you can get started any time. Within a couple of days one of our licensed medical providers will conduct a virtual assessment by reviewing your answers and photos. They’ll create your personalized prescription treatment plan (if medically appropriate), then our pharmacy will send the medication directly to your door.

• How can I prevent hair loss?

  It is unknown the extent to which hair loss can be prevented, but prescription treatments like the ones offered through Nurx can help to slow down and reduce female pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia).

• How long does it take for hair to grow?

  Hair is in the growth (anagen) stage of its cycle for up to 2-8 years. There is a lot of variability, but on average, human scalp hair grows about 1/2 inch a month.

• How can I stop hair loss?

  Prescription treatments like the ones offered through Nurx can slow down, and in some cases reverse female pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia).

• Are there certain medications that cause hair loss in women?

  There are a variety of medications that, in some cases, can cause hair loss in women. It’s important to speak with your Nurx provider about all of the medications you are currently taking so that they can assess your hair loss and provide a treatment plan tailored to your health history.

• What is alopecia?

  Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss. There are a variety of different kinds of alopecia, which can be caused by aging, stress, autoimmune conditions, recent weight loss/surgeries, genetics, and hair styling practices. The treatments for hair loss depend on a number of factors, including its cause, your own medical history, and your preference for oral, topical, or procedural approaches.

• How much does women's hair loss treatment through Nurx cost?

  There is an initial consultation fee of $80, and then the cost of your treatments. Most women’s hair loss patients pay $20 per month through Nurx. Shipping is always free.

• Who can use hair loss treatment from Nurx?

  Individuals who are currently experiencing female pattern hair loss can request treatment through Nurx. Our partner, Keeps, specializes in male pattern hair loss.

• When does postpartum hair loss stop?

  Postpartum hair loss generally starts a few months after delivery, and can last for several months to a year. When the shedding stops, hair begins to grow again--but slowly, about 1/2 inch a month. Nurx does not offer treatment for hair loss that is linked to postpartum, which is more commonly considered telogen effluvium.

• How can I find out what medications Nurx offers?

  You can find many of the medications we offer on this page. Our providers are specially trained on a range of topical and oral medications that are clinically proven to be effective for treating hair loss, some of which may not be on this page. A Nurx medical provider will personalize your treatment plan based on your specific needs. If you have any medication preferences, please let us know in your medical consultation.

• Can I use my insurance for hair loss treatment?

  We do not accept insurance for women’s hair loss treatment at this time. Patients will pay out-of-pocket for their 1-year, 1-time medical consultation fee and for medications. We accept most HSA and FSA cards and additionally can help you with submitting information to your insurance company for a potential reimbursement (specific health plan benefits will determine reimbursement).

• What might cause temporary hair loss?

  Usually, a physically or emotionally stressful event. A super common example is after giving birth; other triggers could be a surgical procedure, high fevers, COVID-19, chronic illness, or extreme weight loss. Unfortunately, Nurx does not treat temporary hair loss, which is considered telogen effluvium.
