Avoiding skin-to-skin contact with an infected person, sexual or otherwise, is the only completely effective means of preventing human papillomavirus (HPV). However, there are vaccines available that can prevent the spread of certain strains of the virus. Getting vaccinated and being tested regularly is the best way to prevent HPV infection.
HPV passes from one person to another through contact with skin that has been infected. Condoms that are used properly can lower your chances of infection by the virus, but because the virus can infect areas that are not covered by condoms, they are not 100% effective.
Vaccination
HPV can cause genital warts in men and women, and it can cause cervical cancer in women. More than 100 strains of HPV exist, which is where the vaccine Gardasil-9 comes into play. This vaccine can prevent the spread of some of the most common and high-risk forms of the virus, such as strains 16 and 18, which cause the majority of cases of cervical cancer.
