Clindamycin 1% & Benzoyl Peroxide 5% Gel

This combination gel works in two ways. As an antibacterial with the antibiotic clindamycin, the gel works to kill bacteria that contribute to acne, although clindamycin doesn't work to physically clean pores. That's where benzoyl peroxide comes in. Benzoyl peroxide works as an exfoliant and removes sebum (oil) and dead skin cells to double the fight against acne-causing bacteria.

Apply a thin layer to affected areas according to product directions. It may take up to six weeks to see a decrease in acne and up to 12 weeks to see the full benefits.

When using this product, avoid getting it in the eyes, mouth, or inside the nose. Avoid applying to areas of broken skin or skin that has been windburned or sunburned. Wash your hands after using the gel and avoid contact with hair or clothing as it can cause bleaching. Avoid using this product more often than directed, your condition will not improve faster and you increase the risk of side effects.

This drug can be passed into breast milk, so consult your doctor before breastfeeding or before using it.

These common side effects might last for the first few days or weeks while your skin is adjusting to the medication. Use sunblock liberally and apply moisturizer to help combat the drying effects of Duac.

Uncommon side effects include diarrhea, abdominal or stomach pain, cramping, or blood in the stool. Serious allergic reactions, although rare, can include itching, swelling, dizziness, and trouble breathing. If you experience any symptoms other than common side effects, see your doctor.

Avoid using the gel in combination with erythromycin. Erythromycin, also an antibiotic, and clindamycin have been known to clash, and overuse of antibiotics can be dangerous and worsen side effects. Avoid using the gel if you are taking any neuromuscular blocking agents as it can enhance their action.

The gel should be stored in the refrigerator, but do not freeze it. In order to maintain its structural integrity and efficacy don't leave it in a car or on a windowsill where sunlight could reach it.

You will probably be prescribed the gel for a 6 to 12-week cycle. After that, your doctor will determine whether or not to continue using the gel or switch to another medication.
