Skyla

Skyla is inserted by your healthcare provider following an exam. Once Skyla has been inserted, your physician will schedule a follow-up visit to make sure everything is in place.

Skyla releases approximately 14 micrograms of LGN each day. Skyla can remain in place for up to three years, but if you decide to become pregnant, fertility returns shortly after Skyla is removed. Three out of four women who want to become pregnant usually conceive within the first year after the removal of Skyla.

Skyla is available by prescription and may be covered by some insurance policies. Contact your provider to find out if Skyla is covered.

Women who might be pregnant should not use Skyla. Women who have had serious pelvic infections like pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) are cautioned against using intrauterine devices. Less than 1% of women develop PID from the use of Skyla.

If you are sensitive to progestin or have a condition that changes the shape of the uterine cavity  (fibroids), consider using a different birth control method. Skyla does not prevent sexually transmitted infections.

• Nausea
• Breast tenderness

Side effects are fairly common and can lessen over time, typically within 2-3 months. Although not common, expulsion is a possibility and can lead to unwanted pregnancy. If you have concerns about the placement of Skyla talk to your physician and schedule a visit. In the meantime, use backup birth control as a precaution.

Yes! Skyla was designed for women who have never had children. Unlike other IUDs, Skyla is FDA approved for use by women whether or not they have ever given birth.

Once the IUD is inserted, Skyla lasts for up to three years but can be removed at any time. If you plan to become pregnant after the removal of Skyla, fertility returns shortly. Most women become pregnant within the first year.

A lot will probably depend on your tolerance for discomfort. Your doctor may advise you to take ibuprofen prior to your appointment. Speak to your doctor about your concerns so they can advise you and make the experience as comfortable as possible. If you experience pain or cramping immediately after insertion, alert your doctor to check that Skyla is fitted properly.

You can check that Skyla is properly inserted by inserting two clean fingers to feel the two threads attached to the IUD. Contact your doctor if you can't find or feel the threads.

Skyla can interact with certain medications and supplements. Skyla might also be affected by alcohol or drug use. Talk to your doctor about any medications you may be taking to make sure Skyla is right for you.

Skyla stays in place for up to three years after which it will need to be removed or replaced.

For nursing mothers, be aware that hormones can pass to breast milk, although side effects of Skyla are not known to affect milk production or development.
