Everyone’s skin goes through the natural aging process, but proper care can help your skin look its best  at any age. Though fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging skin are not 100% preventable, the right skincare routine can go a long way towards delaying their appearance and even reversing some signs of aging related to sun damage

Don’t Wait to Start

If there is one fact about anti-aging skincare to remember, it’s this one: the sooner you start, the better. Some damage to the skin is completely unavoidable as you age, but plenty is not. No matter how old you are, adopting a robust regime of skincare in the present means that much damage is being avoided in the future. Even if you can only squeeze in a product or two, an ounce of prevention now is worth much more than a pound of cure down the line.

Your Skin Protection Toolkit

Every anti-aging skincare routine should include a handful of must-haves, including:

Sunscreen

Though the skin can change in response to a number of different environmental factors, the most influential one by far is sun exposure. Whether it’s dark spots, wrinkles, or elastosis, a huge portion of the skin conditions associated with aging are correlated with sun exposure. A daily application of sunscreen (ideally SPF 30 or higher) is a must, and it’s just as important to use the right sunscreen as well. Alba Botanica’s mineral sunscreen or Solbar’s broad spectrum option are both solid choices for anyone looking to up their protection.

Cleanser

Over the course of a single day, your face can become saturated in sweat, oils, dead skin cells, and even particles of air pollution. If left on the face, these materials can clog and irritate pores, laying the foundation for acne and other blemishes that can result in long-term damage. A mild cleanser, used once in the evening and once in the morning, can help prevent any of this buildup from creating lasting issues. We recommend using the Differin gentle cleanser which is highly effective at removing dirt and other particles without causing any irritation.

Moisturizer

As the body ages, the oil-producing sebaceous glands in the pores start to become less active, often resulting in a long-term drying out of the skin. Dry skin is prone to cracking, irritation, wrinkle development, and even acne breakouts for some people — all of which can result in damage. Moisturizer is a crucial product for people of all ages, but its importance grows significantly as you get older and start to deal with dry skin on a more regular basis. CeraVe moisturizing cream is a formula that our medical team recommends.

Retinoids

Considered the most effective wrinkle reducer that doesn’t require an in-office treatment, retinoids is a derivative of Vitamin A that speeds up skin cell turnover and increases collagen production. Prescription retinoids are also highly effective at treating acne, a potential cause of long-lasting skin damage for those who suffer from it. At Nurx, we prescribe two different forms of retinol  — tretinoin and adapalene — and our team of medical professionals can help you determine which one is right for you to start with.

Serums

The rosy glow of youthful skin is the result in part by a strong network of collagen, a protein that helps the skin maintain its hue and form. Collagen usually degrades as the skin ages, but serums that contain highly-concentrated vitamin C may improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles that result.

Not all skincare products will work for all people, but we’re here to help you find the ones that work best for you. Get in touch with a member of our medical team today to learn more about what you should be incorporating into your routine.
