Dark spot treatment

Tretinoin: The generic version of Retin-A, tretinoin is the most widely prescribed retinoid that treats signs of skin aging related to sun exposure. Nurx prescribes tretinoin in three strengths. If a patient is new to retinoids they will usually start a patient on the lowest strength and, if desired, switch the patient to a stronger retinoid if the milder retinoid is well-tolerated (meaning it doesn’t cause skin flaking or irritation).

Adapalene: This less irritating retinoid (which has a non-prescription 0.1% strength version called Differin) may be prescribed to people with skin conditions such eczema, or those with very sensitive skin who experience irritation or redness when using tretinoin.

Melasma treatment

Hydroquinone: This prescription cream is the best-studied treatment for melasma. Usually it is prescribed for no longer than 3 months, because it can have side effects with prolonged use.

Azelaic Acid: This gel reduces dark spots and skin discoloration, and is sometimes prescribed alongside hydroquinone, or after a patient has already used hydroquinone for 3 months and needs to take a break.

Treatment options + pricing

Once you share your health history and pay for your medical consultation, a Nurx healthcare provider will evaluate your skin and determine the right retinoid treatment for you. Then we’ll send a 3-month supply to your door, and send automatic refills for 1 year (but you can put a hold on your medication delivery or cancel any time). These medications are not covered by insurance and only available with out-of-pocket pricing.

Common questions

  • How does melasma treatment with Nurx work?

Simply answer a few questions about your symptoms or health history on the Nurx website or app, then share a few photos of your skin. There’s no appointment required and you can get started any time. Within a couple of days one of our licensed medical providers will conduct a virtual assessment by reviewing your answers and photos. They’ll create your personalized prescription treatment plan (if medically appropriate) then our pharmacy will send the medication directly to your door.

  • How much does melasma treatment through Nurx cost?

When you submit your request for treatment you’ll pay $40 for the medical assessment, and this cost includes one year of messaging with our medical team about your treatment. Medication prices range from $50-$90 for a three-month supply, and are not covered by insurance. Shipping is always free.

  • What type of melasma treatment does Nurx prescribe?

Nurx prescribes the same clinically proven prescription medications you would receive from an in-person dermatologist. This is evidence-backed medication, not mystery creams in fancy packaging.

  • Who can use melasma treatment from Nurx?

Both men and women 18 and older who are not pregnant can request melasma treatment if they live in a state where Nurx operates. Your Nurx medical provider will assess whether we can safely and appropriately treat your symptoms via telehealth.
