The treatments for depression may include antidepressant medications, psychotherapy (talk therapy), or a combination of both.
Antidepressant Medications
The most commonly used antidepressant medications for the treatment of depression are called SSRI’s (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). Antidepressants work by increasing levels of serotonin in your brain. They also block reabsorption of some serotonin to make more serotonin available for use in your brain. This can help you feel less anxious, more relaxed and happier overall.
Talk Therapy
There are several different types of talk therapy that may be used to treat depression. They include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy (IPT), and family therapy. CBT is based on changing one’s patterns of thinking; IPT focuses on improving relationships with others; and family therapy helps families affected by depression work together to support each other with treatment.
