What is buspirone?

Buspirone is used to relieve symptoms of anxiety and to treat anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder. It may be used alone or in conjunction with other medications as part of a combination therapy. Buspirone belongs to a group of medications called anxiolytics, which are commonly used to treat anxiety and anxiety disorders.
How does buspirone work?

Buspirone works by affecting serotonin and dopamine in the brain. Buspirone increases the action of serotonin receptors, lessening anxiety. It has been proven to be particularly effective in treating generalized anxiety disorder. Buspirone may help you think more clearly and worry less. It is also less likely to cause drowsiness or have any sedative effects than other anxiety medications.
What are the side effects of buspirone?

The most common side effects of buspirone include dizziness, headache, insomnia, and nausea. While these side effects tend to improve with time, if they continue after a couple of weeks you should contact your provider, as there may be another issue causing your symptoms.
How do I take buspirone?

Buspirone is usually taken twice per day but can also be taken three times per day depending on your dose. Follow your provider’s instructions, and do not take more or less than prescribed by your provider.
Can I take buspirone with other medications?

If you have been prescribed a certain medication, it’s important to ask your provider if there are any interactions with other medications. This includes over-the-counter drugs and supplements as well. Also, if you’re taking any prescription drug for anxiety or depression treatment, talk to your provider about whether it would be safe to take buspirone (or another supplement) with it. Because these medications can affect serotonin levels in your brain, there is potential for an interaction. Tell your provider if you are taking an MAO inhibitor.
Are there any risks when taking buspirone?

Most people tolerate buspirone well, but it can cause side effects, including dizziness, nausea and headache. Do not drink alcohol while taking buspirone, and do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this drug affects you. Tell your doctor if you have ever had kidney or liver disease, or a history of alcohol or drug abuse; these conditions increase your risk of serious side effects from buspirone. Tell your provider if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while taking buspirone, tell your provider.
How quickly does buspirone work?

Buspirone usually takes 1-2 weeks to have an effect, but it can take up to 6 weeks to reach its full effect. If you’re using buspirone for anxiety or generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), talk to your provider about how long you should take it before stopping or switching to another medication.
